Profitability I believe. I think that's why most Linux distros are free/open source.. no one is really profiting from them. Why would Microsoft or Apple spend so much money developing an OS that someone would be free to change? Granted not everything that is open source has to be free and vice versa, but generally I've found this to be the case (open source = free).
